Literacy Philosophies

Through my discussions with other teachers this week, I have noticed some common ideals.  Every teacher I spoke with this week acknowledges the importance of literacy instruction as a kind of pre-requisite to other learning.  Teachers from 3rd grade to middle school mentioned that, if a student does not know how to read, they will likely not be successful in their other classes.

Many other teachers also commented that early literacy intervention is key in literacy instruction.  They believe that struggling readers who receive additional support early on tend to be stronger readers as they progress through school.

The general consensus: Literacy is a foundation upon which other learning is built.  Some students struggle to develop important literacy skills.  These struggling students will benefit from having their needs met early on in school.
